The first publicly announced process of photography (January 1839) features a unique photographic image on a solid silver mirror. Both the production processes of the image and its presentation are laborious, intricate, and prone to failure of intention. Each silver-coated copper plate must be brought to a state of high mirror-like polish from the matte condition of the foundry production. Sensitised to light with elemental iodine and bromine, the plate is exposed in camera and developed over heated mercury to reveal the latent image. The emulsionless image sits directly on the surface of the metal sheet..
These Daguereotypes are in the 9th (2 x 2.5 inches), 6th (2.75 x 3.25 inches), 1/4 (3.25 x 4.25 inches) and 1/3rd (3.75 x 4.25 inches) plate formats.
Some images available for purchase in the online store.
