For the George Eastman House / International Center for Photography "Young America" retrospective of Daguerreotypes by the famous Boston Daguerreotype studio of Southworth and Hawes, CasedImage.com was commissioned to make custom oversize brass mats. For the exhibition it was decided not to break the seals on the conservation enclosures of the plate packages to mount the mats traditionally on top of the plates. Instead, the 52 whole-plate images were to sit on top of the cover glass of the image, creating a distance between the mat underside and the plate. To avoid the reflection of the brass mat on the Daguerreotype plate, I back-painted the brass mats black. In this way the reflection gives a minimal dark vignette around the image instead. Like all my mats, they are hand beveled and burnished solid brass mats (1mm thickness), colored gold and varnished. |
